  • A significant case of utilizing cloud platforms in the shipbuilding industry
  • Strengthening the global ICT competitiveness of Korea’s shipbuilding industry
  • Establishing a Smart Ship technology ecosystem (Eco System) in collaboration with domestic SMEs

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (CEO Sung-Lip Jung) announced on the 21st that it had signed an MOU with Naver Business Platform (CEO Won-Ki Park) and Intel Korea (CEO Myung-Sook Kwon) to jointly implement a Smart Ship 4.0 service infrastructure project.

The cloud-based Smart Ship 4.0 service infrastructure moves beyond traditional equipment-centered control and monitoring by integrating cloud technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), and other advanced technologies to enable real-time data collection. The accumulated data will facilitate predictive maintenance support.

DSME has decided to build the infrastructure on Naver Cloud Platform, operated by Naver Business Platform (NBP), while Intel’s IoT solutions will be adopted for the onboard (On-ship) IoT system.

According to NBP, this three-party agreement is a meaningful example of utilizing cloud platforms not only in the internet and gaming service sectors but also in key industries such as shipbuilding and maritime transport.

During the MOU signing ceremony on May 17 at DSME’s Seoul office, Hang-Seop Eom (Head of DSME Central Research Institute), Won-Ki Park (CEO of Naver Business Platform), and Myung-Sook Kwon (CEO of Intel Korea) signed the agreement and took a commemorative photo.

Intel Korea has expressed its commitment to actively support the development of IoT Hub/Gateway Devices for collecting onboard system data at DSME. Additionally, Intel plans to integrate its latest data center solutions into Naver Cloud Platform.

Furthermore, the three companies plan to establish the SIoT (Ship IoT) cluster, a technology ecosystem that collaborates with domestic SMEs. The goal of the SIoT cluster is to develop various Smart Ship technologies and services based on purely domestic technology, thereby enhancing the global ICT competitiveness of Korea’s shipbuilding industry.

At the signing ceremony, Hang-Seop Eom, Head of DSME Central Research Institute, stated, "With this agreement, we aim to lead the global Smart Ship IoT infrastructure service market by expanding our collaboration to related equipment industries through an open platform."
